The prerequisites necessary to participate in this course are:
- Be medically fit to follow the entire internship;
- Be interested in peace support missions;
- Master the French or English language;
- Be likely to hold a job in a peace support operation in Africa.
Objectives of the Internship:
The Rights and Protection of Children course is a course designed to promote peace support practices among personnel of peace support operations (PSO) and to strengthen their role in protecting children during the mission.
General organization of the internship:
- The internship lasts one week,
- The internship is conducted in French and English,
- The course is open to soldiers, civilians and police of both sexes.
Discussed subjects:
The course has a total of nine modules. Modules should be considered as thematic areas, sessions allow the course to be divided into time portions:
Module A: Understanding Early Childhood and Child Development
Module B: The Changing Nature of Conflict and the Effects of Armed Conflict on Children
Module C: The rights-based approach to child protection in practice
Module D: Legal instruments protecting children in situations of armed conflict
Module E: Communicating with a child, his family and his community - first contact and communication techniques
Module F: The roles of the different components of a multidimensional PSO in relation to children
Module G: Code of Conduct and Rules of Engagement for Relationships with a Child
Module H: Communication and collaboration with other actors involved in child protection
Module I: Monitoring and reporting on the situation of children in armed conflict
Special point:
Practical exercises are organized to supplement theoretical knowledge.
Each trainee has 20 minutes to briefly present their country, their armed forces (for the military) or the organization to which they belong (for civilians). It is advisable to prepare this presentation before joining Bamako.
Civilian personnel, interested in following the training and who meet the selection criteria, must send their CV along with the registration form to the following address civil applications@empbamako.org - by mentioning in the subject line the name of the course. Out of 25 participants, 13 are civilians. Each trainee receives in advance all documents relating to the internship and all important readings to allow the intern to optimize his internship week. It is advisable to prepare and read the documentation before joining the course.
