The (UN) General Assembly has proclaimed May 29 as the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers to pay tribute to all the men and women who have served in peacekeeping operations, because of their exceptional level of professionalism, dedication and courage and to honor the memory of those who lost their lives in the service of peace (resolution 57/129 of 11 December 2002). She called on all Member States, United Nations agencies, non-governmental organizations and individuals to mark the day as appropriate.
